Ofrenda: Meaning and Significance
The altar
Día de los Muertos would not be what it is without the ofrenda. “Ofrenda” in Spanish means “offering” and is an altar built annually to attract spirits. Ofrendas are vibrant, can be quite small or very grand, and can be seen all over from inside people's homes or even out on the street for everyone to see. An ofrenda has some classically traditional items placed on it that may differ from region to region depending on what is regularly practiced and expected. The ofrenda is believed to be a gateway between worlds, and traditionally allows spirits to visit Earth once again on the evenings of November 1st and 2nd. Some ofrendas are multi-tiered, with each tier having its own meaning and purpose. We will be exploring a general understanding of the altar and the most common ways it is displayed.
